I love churches. I go to sleep thinking about churches, and I wake up thinking about churches. The church I serve, the churches where I belong, my friends' churches, .... All of my favorite movies are about churches (at least as I define them- Rachael calls them "town coming together movies.") If there were trashy romance novels in which people fell in love with churches, I would probably read them.
But it turns out that not everybody loves churches as much as I do. And one reason is that too many of these Beloved Communities are closeted.
October is National Coming Out Month. How can your congregation be more out to the community? How can you come out again, to people who have known you forever and to people who are just meeting you, as fully inclusive embodiments of the Risen Lord? How can you shout God's love and welcome into a culture that has written you off? How can you tell all the people who would go to church if they could "just find a church that was full of love, that welcomed everybody, and that didn't ask you to be someone you're not"- that you might just be a church enough that is weird enough for even them!
Please join me in praying for AWAB, and for all of our churches, and for the many churches that we love that are coming out every day- coming out of old ways of being, coming out of habits that keep our lights under bushels, coming out into the New Day of God's Love!
